Our
Beginnings:
The
founder of cat control had three years of cat and dog rescue
experience prior to starting the business. She
saved the lives of over 200 cats and dogs during the time that
she did her volunteer work by fostering and attending adoption
day with the Wasco Rescue group.
The
business idea of trapping and transporting wild cats was
discovered in 2006 when the founder had to trap some 30 feral
cats that belonged to her neighbor who had moved and left
the cats behind. When she called to ask the Animal
Control to come pick up the cats they informed her that
they do no pick up cats. After trapping cats
in her neighborhood she than began to assist family members
(family members reported less fleas and no more smell from
unaltered male cats.) The business idea made
sense because trapping cats does take time and effort, and it
can be very emotional for most people.
Prior
to starting the business the founder communicated with
Bakersfield Animal Control about the laws, and in doing so
established a rapport with the people at Animal Control. Animal
control does provide many referrals.--Animal Control does have
limited space so this is why we only trap three cats a day per
client.--
ASPCA
was notified of our services in March of 2007, and they too have
been very helpful by referring clients to us.
In
2007 Bakersfield Cat Control took on the first commercial cat
trapping for a large apartment complex. The
cats that were friendly were placed in to rescue and
spayed/neutered (this was made possible by the Wasco Rescue
Group) ---Do not attempt to take them any cats they have more
than they can handle---- Since Bakersfield
Cat Control began taking care of commercial properties we had to
acquire general liability insurance. We now
have several clients who own investment property. We have also
trapped in the Pepsi Co. warehouse, and Denny’s.
In
Feb. 2008 Bakersfield Cat Control had a booth at the Bakersfield
Rec. and Sportsman show. After the show the
business started picking up.
Just
recently Bakersfield Cat Control had a booth at the Street Fair,
and ran an advertisement in the Coffee News.
The
month of June 2008 has been our busiest month so far. Some of
our clients have to book two weeks in advance. Also,
there are more people hiring Bakersfield Cat Control to trap
wild cats to have them spayed/neutered because the SPCA
has made vouchers available to pay for the spay/neuter of wild
cats.
