INTRODUCTION:
You or someone you know may have a problem with feral cats. This is true of thousands here in Kern County. Some of our clients started feeding a cat and then the next thing they knew they had twenty or more cats which are now reproducing again. Some of our clients need help because a neighbor is feeding feral cats, and now there are so many cats defecating in their back yard that their children cannot play in their own back yard due to unsanitary conditions. Many apartment complexes have people moving out and leaving cats behind or tenants who feed, but don’t bother to spay or neuter their cats.
Why do people seek your services?
People who seek our services care about cats, but they are facing a serious problem with a feral cat or feral cat colony which may be breeding out of control.
Some clients choose to have the cats trapped for the purpose of spay/neuter then released back to the property from which they came. This process is known as TNR. Many of our clients cannot afford TNR because they cannot afford to feed the cats or the facility where the cats are living is not a humane place for the cats to live so the cats are taken to Kern County Animal Control. For some people the idea of taking cats to KCAC seems cruel, but when a feral colony has been abandoned and is starving to death because the person moved, died or simply cannot afford to feed the cats KCAC is the best option in these situations.
Why doesn’t Bakersfield Cat Control take care of
these cats, and find homes for them?
We don’t have the funding or the space. However we do love cats, and would save them all if we could. Although, we do have a rescue program we have limited space and funding.
Some of our current projects to help the feral cats at the moment are: finding farmers or businesses that want feral cats. We need volunteers to train and then assist us in making contact with the farmers or business owners. Then we need funding to build Holding cages for the feral cats to live in for 4-6 weeks until they are established in their new environment.
Other projects are: fundraising, grant research, transport to Fix Nation in Burbank to spay/neuter feral cats. If you can help with any of our current projects then please contact
konniellen@yahoo.com
We are also looking for rescues that are willing to take in kittens too small to spay/neuter. If you have non-profit in need of kittens we would be happy to assist with transport. Contact

Why would such a service need to exist? The answer to this question is only understood when you experience the sheer volume of kittens born each year. Many rescue groups, are lucky to adopt out five cats on a good weekend by sitting at Petsmart or Petco all day long with an average of about 200-1000 more coming into the Kern County shelter system each week. By four months of age cats can begin breeding and giving birth to three litters a year with a gestation period of only sixty days. A cat’s life span is approximately 15-20 years. What this means is that in order to save every cat in Kern County each household would have to be able to take in at least 17+ cats.
